The Cancellation Game of 2014

Have you noticed that up until last week none of the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW) cancelled any shows? We have made it to the end of October and ABC's Manhattan Love Story is the only show to meet its demise. The show was cancelled on October 24th.

At this time last season almost all of the networks were finished canceling shows, so what's taking so long? The answer actually makes sense. Did you know that 46% of households have a DVR as of 2013? With so many different channels and programs overlapping primetime shows have become common.  The networks are giving people a chance to watch these new shows on their DVRs before making the decision to cancel. The Nielsen Rating system has recently discovered that their calculations on viewership have been wrong due to DVR systems.  We should start seeing more cancellations in the weeks to come but with the amount of time that it's taking many shows may be able to air at least 10 episodes before the end.

My prediction is that FOX's Utopia is the next to go. It has already been moved to the dreaded Friday night.

*** I was right! Utopia was cancelled two weeks after this post.
